Safety Guide
Buying and selling second-hand mobility equipment safely.
Mobility Directory is a community platform - we connect buyers and sellers but do not handle transactions. Please read these tips before completing any transaction.
Before you meet
- Ask for additional photos or a video call to verify the item is real and as described.
- Check the seller's profile - how long have they been registered? Have they listed before?
- Search the item make and model online to understand what a fair price looks like.
- If buying powered equipment, ask for the battery age and service history.
- Confirm the exact postcode/location before travelling.
Meeting in person
- Meet in a public place where possible, such as a car park, supermarket, or community centre.
- Bring someone with you if you can - especially for higher-value items.
- Test all functions of the equipment before handing over payment.
- Check for damage, wear, or signs that the item doesn't match the description.
- For powered equipment: charge it, test it, and check the battery holds charge.
- Trust your instincts - if something feels off, it's fine to walk away.
Payment
- Pay on collection after inspecting the item - never pay in advance to a stranger.
- Cash is safest for local collection. Bank transfer is acceptable once you have confirmed the item.
- Avoid PayPal Friends & Family - it offers no buyer protection.
- Never send gift cards, cryptocurrency, or wire transfers to someone you haven't met.
- Keep a record of the transaction - a receipt, bank statement, or message history.
Common scam warning signs
Price is too good to be true
Scammers often list quality equipment far below market value to attract buyers quickly.
Seller can't meet in person
Claims to be abroad, deployed, in hospital, or otherwise unable to show you the item.
Asks for advance payment or deposit
Requests money before you have seen or collected the item.
Pressure to decide quickly
"I have three other people interested" - legitimate sellers don't rush you.
